Mark Attendees as Attended

Mark attendees as "Attended" so they receive credit and a certificate of completion for your event.

🎓 This article is for instructors.

For attendees to receive credit and a certificate of completion, they must be marked as Attended for your event. Marking attendees as Attended confirms their active participation and is what enables their credit reporting and certificate availability. This action can only be performed by the instructor, making it an essential step in your event workflow.

⚠️ Important: Attendees will not receive credit or a certificate unless they're marked as Attended. Whether attendees self-record their attendance or you mark them manually, this confirmation is what enables their credit.

How attendees get marked as Attended

Attendance can be confirmed two ways, and many events use a combination of both:

  • You mark attendees manually (this article). You check the Attended box next to each attendee. Best for events with a complete list of pre-registered attendees, such as private or small-group events where you know who attended.
  • Attendees self-record their attendance. Attendees confirm their attendance using either the Paperless Attendance Slide (QR code displayed on screen) or the Attendance Recording Guide (a PDF you print). Best for larger events, walk-ins, or events where you couldn't drive pre-registration. See Use the CEU Events Paperless Attendance Slide and Use the Attendance Recording Guide.

This article covers the manual marking process. For the self-service tools, see the linked articles above.

How to mark attendees as Attended (web browser)

Recommended for events with a complete list of pre-registered attendees.

  1. Sign in to www.ceuevents.com using your instructor account credentials.
  2. Click on the Events menu.
  3. Locate the event you need to mark attendees for and click on it.
  4. Find the list of pre-registered attendees and locate the Attended column.

    Event_Details
  5. For each attendee who completed your session, click the checkbox under the Attended column next to their name.
  6. Repeat for all attendees who should be credited.

Once all appropriate attendees are marked as Attended, certificates are instantly available for most attendees.

📝 Note: For attendees who pre-registered through their own CEU Events account, their Certificate column will show Ready as soon as you mark them as Attended — and they can immediately download it from their attendee account. Ad hoc attendees (added manually) will show Sign-In Required in the Certificate column until they complete the sign-in process. See Manually Add an Attendee for how to send them the sign-in link via Certificate Notice.

💡 Tip: For webinars, download the attendance report from your webinar application and mark all attendees who qualify for credit based on that report. Doing this promptly ensures attendees receive their certificate and credit as soon as possible — and minimizes follow-up inquiries from participants.

Understanding the Credits and Certificate columns

The event details page includes two status columns — Credits and Certificate — that show the current state of each attendee's credit reporting and certificate availability. The full legend is displayed at the bottom of the event details page.

Credits column — shows the membership or license number CEU Events is reporting credit to, along with a status:

  • Reported — Credit has been reported to the organization.
  • Invalid — The membership or license number was not recognized, or the name does not match the account on file.
  • Duplicate — Credit was previously issued for this course during its lifecycle and rejected by the organization.

Certificate column — shows whether the attendee's certificate is available:

  • Ready —  The certificate is available for the attendee to download from their account. As the instructor, you can also download their certificate — see below.
  • Sign-In Required — The attendee was added manually. They need to complete the sign-in process before they can access their certificate. See Manually Add an Attendee for how to send them the sign-in link.
Download an attendee's certificate (optional)

When the Certificate column shows Ready, you can download the attendee's certificate yourself if needed:

  1. Click the (⋯) menu next to the attendee's name.
  2. Click Download Certificate.

This is optional — attendees can always access their own certificates from their CEU Events account. The download option is available for instructors who want to share a certificate directly with the attendee.

How to mark attendees as Attended (mobile app)
  1. Open and sign in to the CEU Events mobile app.
  2. Tap the event card for the event you're marking attendance for.

What happens next

Once attendees are marked as Attended:

  • Their attendance is recorded for credit reporting, processed according to the applicable reporting window — see Attendance Reporting Requirements.
  • For attendees who pre-registered through their own account, their certificate of completion is instantly available to download from their attendee account — no further action needed from you.
  • For ad hoc attendees and other situations, see Issuing a Certificate of Completion for how certificates are provided.
Best practices
  • Mark attendance promptly. The sooner you mark attendees as Attended, the sooner their credit is reported and certificates become available — which reduces follow-up questions.
  • For webinars, use your webinar app's attendance report. Cross-reference the report against your CEU Events attendee list and mark everyone who qualifies.
  • Combine manual marking with self-service for mixed events. For events with both pre-registered attendees and walk-ins, mark your known attendees manually and let walk-ins self-record via the Paperless Attendance Slide or Attendance Recording Guide.
  • Double-check before finalizing. Make sure you've marked everyone who attended — anyone left unmarked won't receive credit.
  • Don't mark no-shows as Attended. Only mark attendees who actually participated and earned their credit.

Troubleshooting

  • You don't see the Attended column or checkboxes. Make sure you are viewing one of your own past events, as these options are not available for future events.
  • An attendee who attended isn't on your list. They may not have pre-registered. Have them self-record using the Paperless Attendance Slide or the Attendance Recording Guide with the Event Code. See Use the CEU Events Paperless Attendance Slide or Use the Attendance Recording Guide.
  • You marked the wrong attendee as Attended. Uncheck the Attended box next to their name to reverse it, as long as it's within the applicable reporting window.
  • An attendee says they didn't get credit after being marked. Confirm they were marked as Attended and that they have a complete CEU Events account with their membership/license number on file. See Attendance Reporting Requirements for all the conditions that must be met.
